The CRC 1153 and the Institute of Forming Technology and Machines invited 12 interested female students to an exciting open-die forging workshop in the IFUM hall on 28th and 29th May. In this workshop, the material was traditionally shaped using a hammer, anvil and auxiliary tools. The female students were introduced to open-die forging under the professional guidance of Uwe Hoffmann, who is a 5th generation blacksmith. Various basics were explained to the students and taught in practice. Uwe Hoffmann began the workshop with stories about the history of tool processing. As part of his stories, he started with stone tools and moved on to the development of furnaces for separating different materials. He ended his exciting presentation with the modern forging of tools. During the practical exercises, each student successfully forged a hook and a nail themselves, which they were of course allowed to take home with them.
All in all, it was a successful event, as could be seen from the satisfied and tired faces of the participants. We are delighted that the workshop was so well received and would like to thank Uwe Hoffmann for his active support!
